The government of Rwanda canceled the contract with the company that leased the Gishwati forest.

The Ministry of Environment, wrote to the company called IKIZERE Silviculture ltd, which leased the  Gishwati forest to the people, that the contract it had with the Government of Rwanda to manage and maintain the forest has been temporarily suspended, pending the results of the ongoing inspection.

Another Gishwati forest is a park located in Rutsiro and Ngororero Districts in the Western Province of the country, which is 3,558 hectares, including the Gishwati area with an area of ​​1,570 hectares, and the Mukura area with an area of ​​1,988 hectares. .

The Mukura forest was turned into a park in 2015 and it was called the Gishwati-Mukura National Park, since then the government and its partners began to take care of it by planting and removing trees to make it a national park. There have been reclamation activities both on the Mukura side and on the Gishwati side.
